E-SIM under VAT

Despite the announcement in March, mobile phone operator Grameenphone started selling e-SIMs on Monday due to policy complications. But before that, the new technology e-SIM has also been brought under the value added tax (VAT) of Tk 200 like ordinary SIM.

The National Board of Revenue (NBR) issued a notification in this regard on Sunday. In addition, the Commissioner of the Large Taxpayer Unit (LTU) of VAT has been informed of the new instructions.

According to the directive, e-SIMs are defined as ordinary SIM, providers and will come under tax.

In 2019, a tax of Tk 200 was levied on SIM supply. Mobile phone operators pay the tax to the government treasury on SIM sales.

If the SIM is lost or damaged, a tax of Tk.100 is levied on restoration or conversion.
